Local Basotho folklore tells of Setlofe as a bashful young woman, promised in marriage to the warrior Matsa (Rhebokkop), who abandoned her for someone else. This betrayal shattered Setlofe’s heart, and to this day, when memories of her lost love surface, she pulls her cloak over her face and sheds tears. This is why when clouds envelop Setlofe, rain will surely follow in Clarens.
Before you tee off, allow yourself to fully appreciate the stunning backdrop of this charming settlement and the complete circular mountain panorama. Each of the 18 holes winds alongside and over the peaceful river system with its beautiful succession of trout pools, waterfalls, and cascading waters. The pristinely maintained Kikuyu fairways and Bent grass putting surfaces are bordered by established Willow trees and striking Lombardy poplars that define this region. The course design follows a traditional “risk versus reward” philosophy. While the fairways offer generous landing zones from the tees, allowing golfers to reach greens within their expected score range, virtually every putting surface sits close to water hazards. This creates an intriguing choice: play conservatively according to your skill level, or take aggressive lines toward the pins for lower scores.
